Fresh claims of an arrest involving Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya’s communications officer have emerged amid escalating political tensions between the county boss and President William Ruto.
Questions are mounting over the reported incident as the political fallout between Natembeya and the national government continues to intensify.
However, the alleged arrest had not been independently confirmed by the latest reports available at the time of writing. The circumstances surrounding the reported incident, including the officer’s whereabouts and the reasons for any possible arrest, remain unclear.
Political tensions continue to escalate
The development comes against the backdrop of an increasingly bitter disagreement between Natembeya and President Ruto over development projects and the respective responsibilities of national and county governments.
The dispute intensified during Ruto’s recent tour of Trans Nzoia, where the President criticised the governor over development initiatives, including the proposed upgrade of Kitale Level 5 Hospital and the stalled Kitale Stadium project.
Natembeya, in turn, has accused the national government of interfering with county affairs and taking credit for projects he says were undertaken by his administration.
Concerns over security and possible arrests
The governor has also raised concerns after his security detail was withdrawn following the President’s visit to the county.
Natembeya called on Inspector-General of Police Douglas Kanja to explain the decision, saying the withdrawal had happened for a second time and should comply with constitutional safeguards. The government had not publicly provided a clear explanation in the reports published at the time.
On October 17, Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka also expressed concern over what he described as an alleged plan to arrest Natembeya and possibly other opposition leaders. His claims were not independently verified.
What happens next?
The latest allegation is likely to draw further attention to the growing political confrontation, but confirmation from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, the National Police Service or the officer’s representatives is needed to establish what happened.
For now, the alleged arrest should not be treated as confirmed, and no direct link between the reported incident and the political dispute has been established.
