A newly graduated police constable has been arrested after allegedly fatally shooting his colleague during induction training at the Wikithuki Border Patrol Unit (BPU) Training Camp in Tseikuru, Kitui County.
The suspect, identified as Constable Hussein Yusuf Ali, was arrested on Monday, October 26, 2026, hours after allegedly shooting Constable Raphael Ojiambo at the training facility.
The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, October 25, at around 3pm, leaving fellow officers shocked as investigators began piecing together what led to the deadly shooting.
Suspect Tracked Down in a Thicket
According to reports, Ali allegedly fled the training camp after the shooting, triggering a manhunt by security officers.
He was reportedly traced to a thorny bush about three kilometres from the camp, where he was arrested and escorted to Tseikuru Police Station.
Investigators recovered two G3 rifles at the scene, one reportedly assigned to the deceased officer and the other to the suspect.
Two mobile phones were also recovered for forensic examination, with reports indicating that one phone had a damaged screen.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation, and authorities have yet to establish the motive.
Both Officers Had Recently Graduated
Ali and Ojiambo had recently completed police training and were undergoing induction at the Wikithuki BPU camp when the incident occurred.
Ojiambo reportedly sustained a gunshot wound to the chest, with the bullet lodging near his left shoulder.
His body was taken to the mortuary pending a postmortem examination.
The shooting has raised concerns over the circumstances surrounding the incident at a facility where newly graduated officers were undergoing further training.
Investigations Underway
Police investigators are expected to establish what happened before the shooting, including whether there was a disagreement between the two officers.
Authorities are also expected to examine the recovered firearms and mobile phones as part of the investigation.
No confirmed motive had been established in the reports available, and the suspect’s arrest does not amount to a finding of guilt.
The incident has drawn attention to the importance of firearm safety, discipline and accountability within the National Police Service.
As investigations continue, officers will seek to establish the full circumstances that led to the death of a young constable at the start of his policing career.
