Winnie Odinga Declares Nairobi Senate Bid in 2027, Says She Sees Space as Sifuna Eyes Higher Office.

The EALA MP announced her entry into national elective politics during the first anniversary memorial of her father, Raila Odinga, in Bondo.

East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Winnie Odinga has announced that she will contest the Nairobi senatorial seat in the 2027 General Election.

Winnie made the declaration on Thursday, October 15, 2026, during the first anniversary memorial service of her late father, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, at Migwena Cultural Grounds in Bondo, Siaya County.

Addressing thousands of mourners and political leaders, Winnie urged young Kenyans to step forward and seek elective positions rather than remain on the sidelines of the country’s political affairs.

Her announcement signals her intention to move from regional parliamentary politics into Kenya’s national elective arena.

Winnie Odinga Takes Aim at Nairobi Senate Seat

In her address, Winnie openly linked her decision to contest the Nairobi Senate seat to Senator Edwin Sifuna’s reported ambitions for a higher political office.

“Let it not be a rumour that as Edwin Sifuna searches for higher offices, I see there is some space in Nairobi, and that is why I have decided I will vie for Senator of Nairobi County,” she said.

The remarks drew attention to the emerging political calculations ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), which her father led for years.

Her declaration places her among politicians positioning themselves for elective contests as parties and potential candidates prepare for the next general election.

Winnie Urges Youth to Seek Leadership Positions

Beyond announcing her candidacy, Winnie challenged young people to take a more active role in shaping Kenya’s political future.

She called on them to contest elective positions at different levels in 2027, arguing that young Kenyans should participate directly in governance rather than leave political decisions to established leaders.

She also invoked her father’s legacy, urging the younger generation to carry forward the reform agenda associated with his decades-long political career.

Raila, who died on October 15, 2025, aged 80, remained a central figure in Kenya’s opposition politics and democratic reform movements for decades.

What Winnie’s Announcement Means for Nairobi Politics

Winnie’s entry into the Nairobi Senate race sets the stage for a potentially competitive contest in 2027.

Her candidacy will place her political ambitions under scrutiny as voters assess the candidates seeking to represent Nairobi County in the Senate.

The outcome will depend on the nomination process, the political party she contests under, the candidates she faces and the support she secures among Nairobi voters.

For now, her announcement marks a significant step in her political career as she seeks to translate her experience in the East African Legislative Assembly into an elective position in Kenya.

With the 2027 General Election approaching, Nairobi’s senatorial race is likely to attract growing attention as candidates declare their ambitions and parties begin positioning themselves.
